My research explores the ways that images and material culture create meaning, elicit viewer responses, and change over time. I’m interested in the transition between Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages–what I lovingly refer to as the “awkward teenage years” of the Middle Ages.
My current projects include an English translation and commentary on the 9th-century collection of image-poems In Honorem Sanctae Crucis by Hrabanus Maurus and a new project that traces the presence of medieval manuscripts in early modern printing. I have a background in technical theatre, experience as an illustrator, and continue to maintain a studio practice in my “spare” time.
I am the Director of the Gallery and Collection at Westminster Presbyterian Church, where I curate six major exhibits each year. I also teach late antique and medieval art courses as a Visiting Assistant Professor in Art History at the University of Minnesota.
